About Volvo Ocean Race

The Volvo Ocean Race is the world’s toughest sailing event, an exceptional test of sporting and human endeavour featuring the elite of the sailing profession. It is a marathon on the seas lasting over eight months, passing through four oceans and five continents, and it will push the athletes to the limits of endurance.

The 2011–12 Volvo Ocean Race was the 11th edition of the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, yacht race which started with an in-port race in Alicante, Spain on 29 October 2011 with six Volvo Open 70 yachts at the start line and ended with an in-port race in Galway, Ireland on 7 July 2012. The 39,270 NM route involved stopovers and in-port races in Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, Itajaí, Brazil, Miami, Lisbon, Lorient. The race consisted of nine ocean races and ten in-port races. Serenity Sanya Marina as the selected stopover host-port of Sanya during the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012.

About Team Sanya

Team Sanya is the Chinese entry in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011/12. Skippered by Mike Sanderson, world class sailor and two times winner of the Volvo Ocean Race, the team aims to compete at the highest possible level in the race.

Sanya is the Chinese stop-over port for the race and the teams reached that destination around 4th February 2012. Sanya is known as the ‘Hawaii of the Orient’ and the Sanya Government are using the platform of the race stop-over and Team Sanya, the race team to raise the profile of this amazing tourist destination.

Team Sanya was launched on 17th June in Beijing, China and is supported by Discover Ireland and Helly Hansen as secondary sponsors.
