First held in 1997 to greet the return of Hong Kong, this offshore race was an important biennial occasion until external factors created a hiatus. After an absence of five years, the event made a welcome return – destination Serenity Sanya Marina – in October 2012.

Organized by Sanya Municipal Government and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, a fleet of 12 sailed from Victoria Harbour at 12.20 pm on 18 October. How long would it take them to complete the downhill slide of 355 nautical miles?

At an average speed of 13.4 knots (almost 25 km/h), the TP52 “Freefire” stormed into Sanya Marina at 17:03:54 on the 19th, finishing with an elapsed time of 28h 43m 54s. This beat the previous record by 51m 14s and was good enough for an overall win on handicap.

Skipper and owner Sam Chan was clearly delighted with his team’s performance and the prevailing conditions. “We had great wind and a great wind angle all the way, giving us another new record and beating our old one”, enthused Sam. “It’s great to be back in Hainan and without a single breakage on the boat, which topped out at 23 knots (nearly 43 km/h). Champagne sailing!”

Excellent marine and shore facilities, combined with a wealth of yacht racing experience, ensured Serenity Sanya Marina’s place as a co-organizer of this high profile event. Participants and RHKYC representatives unanimously praised the reception work, paving the way for future collaboration with the world famous Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, which received its royal charter back in 1894.

The race awards ceremony and party was held at 8 pm on 20 October at the Serenity Yacht Club. Senior officials from Sanya Municipal Government, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and Serenity Sanya Marina were on hand to celebrate the achievements of winners and losers alike.

Sanya Municipal Government attached great importance to the success of this event, establishing a special organizing committee and mobilizing various relevant departments. The cooperation with Hong Kong is expected to lead to further opportunities for development of the maritime industry in Sanya and Hainan in general.
